If you are a fan of Japanese car culture, you are likely familiar with the Initial D Subaru.

Initial D (頭文字D) is a Japanese street racing anime series created from a manga written and illustrated by Shuichi Shigeno.

The Initial D Subaru is owned by Bunta Fujiwara in the show. In this classic anime clip, you can see him race his GC8 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R against a Toyota Ae86.

More About The Initial D WRX And Ae86

The Initial D Subaru doesn’t make an appearance till later in the show. The clip is from season 4 (fourth stage) episode 7. The anime series surrounds Takumi, an up and coming street racer in the Gunma prefecture.

Takumi Races the hills of Mt. Akina in his Eight-Six (Toyota Ae86 Trueno) learning from his father, Bunta Fujiwara who no longer races and focuses on his Tofu shop.

Takumi delivers tofu for his father throughout the series and hones his skills driving around town.

The clip actually shows the father and son racing and proves that the father is still the best downhill racer in Akina.

If you haven’t checked out the show before, it’s pretty good. You can watch on Hulu and funimation.com

The featured image was taken in Japan at the Mitaka Subaru Museum in Tokyo. The Subaru is no normal STI, rather it is a 22B STI. Less than 500 were officially produced in the late ’90s.

I visited Mitaka Subaru in 2017 and it was a fantastic experience. It’s a must see place for Subaru enthusiasts, but JDM fans will enjoy the showroom just as much.
