Did you know that in 1980, one out of every three new cars in the US were sold with a manual transmission? Today it is much harder to get a set of gears you can row through yourself, especially in a new car. Manual transmission cars are much less common (less than 10% of new cars have a manual transmission) but there are still some rather intriguing options and brands to go with if you are a car enthusiast and demand a proper set of gears for your car.
Unfortunately, many of the supercar manufacturers have already started ditching manual transmission cars. The last two Ferrari’s with stick shifts were both 599s built in 2011 for Hong Kong buyers. And the world’s last manual Lamborghini rolled off the assembly line in 2014 (the 2014 Gallardo LP560-2). If you need to drop big bucks on a brand new car and demand a manual, Porsche still makes plenty of options.
Manual transmission cars will likely never go away fully. They are simple and fairly low-cost which make them great options for the cheaper end of the market. These are most of your options if you want a manual transmission in your car:
